Best walks for newborns

The first outings with a newborn can feel daunting — you want fresh air, but you also want to know the path is smooth, the car park is close and there's somewhere to change a nappy if you need to. These are the qualities we look for in a newborn-friendly walk, and how to find them on Bambino Strollers.

Keep it short and flat

With a newborn, an hour out is a triumph. Look for routes under two miles with no steps, gates or steep sections — on Bambino Strollers, filter walks by the 'flat' and 'paved' terrain flags and check the distance shown on every walk card. Lakeside and reservoir circuits are ideal: they tend to be level, well-surfaced and easy to cut short if the day isn't going to plan.

Facilities matter more than views

A beautiful summit is no use if there's nowhere to warm a bottle. Prioritise walks that start from a visitor centre, country park or National Trust property — they usually have accessible toilets, baby changing and a café within pram-pushing distance of the car park. Each walk page lists parking notes and facility ratings from other parents.

Time it around the sleep

Many parents find the pram is the most reliable nap spot they own. Set off just before a nap is due and the motion will often do the rest. Smooth surfaces help here too — compacted gravel and tarmac keep the ride gentle, while cobbles and rooty woodland paths tend to wake a light sleeper.

Our favourite starting points

Tarn Hows in the Lake District is the classic first walk — a 1.8-mile level gravel circuit with benches every few hundred metres. Formal gardens like RHS Wisley are another safe bet: almost every path is smooth, and help is never far away. Search 'flat' walks near you on the map to build your own shortlist.
